The liver is the second most commonly transplanted major organ, after the kidney. Liver transplantation is recommended for patients with severe and irreversible liver disease. Although liver disease is a significant cause for morbidity and mortality in this country, the sad fact remains that it is beyond the reach of most patients, either due to a lack of funds or because demand for organs greatly outstrips supply.
